This vote is open so you can see the current status before you cast your vote. Please take a minute to do so, as your participation helps keep the club alive and progressive.
Also don't forget to add comments to support your chosen idea, even if you had voted differently in the 1st round, it is still wise to cast your vote on the remaining finalists.

Thanks for voting Bilbo all of you
Bilbo with the arkenstone in hand
Bilbo is atop a mound of treasures handing in front of him the Arkenstone. The complex base of the figure is compensating the size of the hobbit.
"Bilbo was climbing the great mound of treasure. Soon he stood upon the top, and still went on. Then they saw him halt and stoop for a moment; but they did not know the reason. It was the Arkenstone, the Heart of the Mountain. So Bilbo guessed from Thorin's description; but indeed there could not be two such gems, even in so marvellous a hoard, even in all the world. Ever as he climbed, the same white gleam had shone before him and drawn his feet towards Slowly it grew to a little globe of pallid light. Now as came near, it was tinged with a flickering sparkle of man colours at the surface, reflected and splintered from the wavering light of his torch. At last he looked down upon it and he caught his breath. The great jewel shone before he feet of its own inner light, and yet, cut and fashioned by the dwarves, who had dug it from the heart of the mountain long ago, it took all light that fell upon it and-changes it into ten thousand sparks of white radiance shot with glints of the rainbow. Suddenly Bilbo's arm went towards it drawn by it enchantment. His small hand would not close about it for it was a large and heavy gem; but he lifted it, shut his eyes, and put it in his deepest pocket."

My vote goes to LOTR figures or events, especially considering the MS cost ... not a shared point of view it seems

I too voted for Bilbo as I have already expressed my concern many times that GF should, as Mornedhel states, focus on lotr figures and/or depicts key events from the books.

I do not agree with this, as you can imagine. So far we've seen wonderful miniatures in the MS-range as e.g. the wine merchant, the attacking camel rider with the Gondorian footsoldier, the Hillmen King, the Lossoth hunter and so very many others. To be honest, I rather prefer to see a new figure from Tolkien's universe being sculpted than to have, let's say a vignette called "15th Gandalf meets 9th Aragorn, watched by the 12th Lord of the Nazgûl" or something like that. I cannot understand why the MS-releases should only be restricted to what some call "canonical" (which means: named) characters. Do you really believe that those "non-canonical" figures would ever be released in a further regular M-series? Do you really believe in this? Just imagine the old M-range without "non-canonical" figures. Just imagine ... we'd have three or four orcs, a handful of Gondorians and another handful of Rohirrim, right? Of course each of those characters in at least 10 different poses. Wouldn't that be nice? In the last years even the Appendices have been checked many times by many of us to find a new idea. Are those characters mentioned in the Appendices "canonical" though they take no active part in Tolkien's writings? Sorry, these are just my thoughts and I do not want to upset anyone around here.

I have to agree with Theobald even though I have voted for Bilbo as I like that idea best. I think that waiting for further M releases to cover non named characters would take too long.

Your main characters are doomed (or blessed) to be repeated many times over. While I can certainly understand collectors wanting to see their favorites born again in various poses, general figures, like your basic Orc, Elf, or some other Nameless Thing, have a certain irresistible appeal as well. Think of their potential in your own adventures in Middle-Earth! Example: Take any old Orc and give him a name. Sprinkle a little might, muscle and ambition over his head, and now you have Baklash and his company of Uruks, sent my Mordor to seize the captive Hobbits from Ugluk and his band! Perhaps they arrive just in time to witness the demise of the Isengarders at the hands of Rohan. Interestingly enough, Baklash also spies the Hobbits’ fortuitous escape and enters Fangorn to claim his prize. Won’t Sauron be pleased! Yippee! Uh-ohh! What’s with the moving trees!!! The scenarios are endless.

I have cast my vote on the musician too, though my orc smith made it also in the second vote. Yes, sure I'd like to see the person playing for the bellydancer the price is no good argument for the Hobbit figure as the price will surely be the same (see Sam with cooking apparatus!) but let things happen like they want, another Bilbo is also fine! with the upcomimg movie interpretation there will surely be some influence for future suggestions, but of course - and that is a great benefit of Mithril Miniatures - , there is no relation between mithril figure apperance and movie adaption! ....imagine noble Thorin Oakenshield with just a bit of beard..... odd..... he's a dwarf!

Good heavens everybody is absolutely free here in sugesting and voting. So I vote for a suggestion that do make sense in fulfilling a pefect diorama with two figures already existed, han in another figure that already do exist. My friend Thingol discovered 12 Bilbo figures. Wow. Let´s hope we won´t get the thirtenth . . . Mornedhelm is pointed out the costs. Exactly the point. I spend over 20 Euros for a thirteenth Bilbo? Surely not. Therefore I am very close to Master Grond and of course to Master Theo !!!! Everybody who sees these two single figures from Far Harad would ask: were are the musicians . . .
PS: good to know that HERE nobody could complain about a different oppinion . . .

Obviously there's a distinct division of opinion here! As Turambar says, we're all welcome to have opinions, but that doesn't mean everyone has to, or is ever likely to, agree with them!
My own opinion on this subject has been stated on numerous occasions, so it shouldn't surprise anyone that my vote is for a character from JRRT's imagination rather than from someone else's interpretation of his "world". Therefore it's Blobbo for me too, though I agree with Thingol that there have been many earlier Blobbos — which is why I was hoping that some of this month's other suggestions would make it to the final. But alas, they didn't.

Oh, meant to add that "canonical" doesn't mean named at all. It means "accepted as accurate and authoritative", i.e. from the hand of a particular authority, writer or whatever. Just thought I'd clear that up. I mean, what't the point of having a 13-volume Oxford Dictionary if I don't use it occasionally?
|

|
Post by Theobald on Nov 24, 2012 11:10:42 GMT
Hm ... I didn't learn that 13-volume-Oxford-Dictionary-books by heart, as you might guess. Though the word "canonical" does also have a second meaning, as far as I know. (Eccl). Which refers to 'Beatifikation'(lat) and the role of an 'Advocatus Dei'. - It's not me to judge upon those matters at all as I am not the person who would dare to do that. To say what is accurate and authorize anything around here. I simply cannot do that. All I did, was just referring to the idea of this MS-Fellowship-suggestion-concept which is about placing suggestions for figures that have to do with Tolkien's LotR and the Hobbit. So I felt free to suggest a Haradan musician, as I thought that there's some need of him/her because the latest small 'vignette' of that Haradrim bellydancer was lacking a person making music. By the way, why could the wealthy Haradan merchant and the bellydancer be regarded as "canonical" (must have been, because they have been released) ? Just for another thought, are all those figures of the wonderful M-Prancing-Pony-Series really 'canonical'? And ... who was it to judge that they are? Sorry, I felt obliged to comment on this again. But just to cut it short, yes, I feel fine here to suggest my idea and see and learn what others think of it. So that there seems to be "a distinct division of opinion" here makes me feel good, as it reveils that anyone can feel free to suggest from his own point of view. The majority-vote will tell. Besides ... I do remember well what trouble my suggestion of a female orc once caused. So I made the suggestion of a Haradan musician with the same smile on my face. Why not? It's just for fun, isn't it.

I think the view of canonical in terms of JRRT's stuff is that Lossoth are canonical because he mentions them, but Lossoth riding jet-skis aren't, because he doesn't. Likewise, Haradrim are canonical because he mentions them, but Haradrim belly-dancers aren't because he doesn't.
In fact we're making a bit of an assumption to even suppose that Tolkien had Arab culture in mind for the south of Middle-earth. There's certainly nothing whatsoever in the books to suggest that he did, but it's such a long-standing and widespread assumption that I think that aspect may be forgiven.
As for the crowd in the Prancing Pony, of course they exist. You're in there every day, so you should know.

Right you are, Master Barliman, right indeed as for the assumptions of what Master JRR Tolkien had in mind about the cultures and countries in the south (i.e. Harad and Far-Harad). Mustn't necessarily being interpreted as a kind of Arab culture, of course. Though interpreting peoples of that area, as Chris Tubb did, with the earlist of his M-figures, leaves me stuck to that logical explanation to depict figures which might match that thought. - As for me, I think we're at the brink of Tolkien's universe, of which we do not have any proof or image how to imagine what he just hinted at when he wanted to express (as I think) the unimaginable world beyond our focus being on the maps of the LotR. So what about Rhûn and the lands of the far east? Isn't it the same with it? - Some imagine those "wainriders" as a people specialized on old Egypt chariot-warfare? long before the story of the LotR took place. I do remember well, that you complained about the MS502 "Pharao", as you called it. So why not also complain about suggestions as MS576 "Junast", who is a character from ICE and not very much Tolkien-like ( I couldn't find a word about Junast from Haradwaith, except the fact that in the old M-series there's the M079 (Junast's guard). What about the "Visi" and the "Razarac" and many more? Are they mentioned by Mr Tolkien? - No. ICE or MERP was their origin, wasn't it? Did anyone complain when those figures were released once because they were non-canonical according to Tolkien's ideas? At least I cannot rember that, as we all were very much pleased to have such wonderful figures, right? So what about those peoples from the East, far from beyond Rhûn? Tolkien does not give any description about those peoples. So why are the Sagath Chieftain (CHR2011) and the samurai-like Lord of Khand (CHR2010) such wonderful figures nobody complained about, though Tolkien didn't give them any name? Why do we have the associatin with Mongols in our minds, when Tolkien wrote about Easterlings? Those horsed peoples that were so fast and dangerous to the world they knew of. Of course they were Inuits without a boat, lost in a desert. Alas ... Coincidence in our minds, right? There's no name offered by Tolkien of one of the Easterling's leaders (except in the Silmarillon, which does not have to be discussed here). So it is better not to have any figure of them ... would be non-canonical indeed. Sorry. to have been trying to get your attention for that long. I just felt obliged to answer and try to point out my point of view about different matters. Just keep on

Well, to be honest ... in case my suggestion wins I'll try to convince Mr Tubb to add a second musician (though that would not be according to a single-figure suggestion). Just see, for a sound for a dance you are in need of a rhythm, right? Good. Then we need a melody being played to it, right? - And does the drummer can do that? No. He is seriously in need of someone playing a tune. Er, second figure being needed, so to say. But what was it, when long ago we were so much surprised that the Ms486A had a Gondorian Ms486b at its side. We didn't know that time that the camel-rider would include another figure, no one was expecting. It was up to Mr Tubb to do that. So, what I want to tell is, that I would dare to ask The Man to add a second musician ... just for the music ....

Basically, Master Tree, I've given up complaining about ICE/MERP-type suggestions, there are so many. But that doesn't mean that they're alright - or all wrong, come to that. They simply don't suit my tastes, and all too often have little to do with Tolkien. Likewise Arabian Nights interpretations of Harad culture.
Inuit without a boat in the desert? What were they doing there in the first place? Ahhh - perhaps it explains why there are no seals in the desert!

"They simply don't suit my tastes" is a sentence I can well understand, Master Barliman. Very well, indeed. As for the Inuits in a desert ... I still dunno. Maybe they were stranded somehow. I cannot explain what did cause it. Maybe it's better not to find seals in a desert. thank you ... Barliman.

On second thought, miniatures are doomed if left to slumber in primer gray, on a gloomy bed of foam, sealed forever in a clear plastic grave. Some of us get so caught up with categorizing and theorizing and likely a whole lot of stockpiling, that we forget to give them life! Whether it be another Bilbo, musician, or unknown Orc, DON’T FORGET TO PAINT YOUR MINIATURES!

Canonical; Heretical, Fanatical . . . you know, owners of the "truth."
If there is a named "canonical" figure that hasn't been produced yet, and it looses in the voting to an everyday "commoner" like a hunter, or a wine-merchant, or a standard-bearer, so be it. The same can be said for MERP figures, whiched launched the Mithril line in the first place.
These named figures in JRRT's works obviously interacted with "common" people, even if not specifically mentioned in his books.
It really becomes a question of, should we limit figures to those specifically mentioned, or to those mentioned as well as those we could reasonably imagine. Well, every month we have a choice. I, like many, have suggested and voted for figures in both categories.

I don't think anyone's ever suggested that only "named" characters should be suggested, Master Twrich, or if they did I missed it.
Certainly the concept of democracy allows people to make their own suggestions and choices every month - and, of course, to comment on opinions with which they don't agree.

Sorry to bring this up here, but does any part of this forum discuss prep-work, brushes or painting technique? I tried posting this question on the General Discussion Board but got what the little boy shot at (viewed 364 times by the same four governing members no doubt).
Also, critiquing photos of painted miniatures submitted by our members once a month might prove interesting as well. Members could ask questions and offer positive comments. It might just add some color and life to an otherwise gray slate. I mean I just can’t get enough of reading about the pros and cons MS releases, vignettes, general miniatures, etc., but I’d also love to hear about the different approaches and methods of painting these miniatures.

I don't post a lot here of late but I just wanted to say this... even if I have often urged people and criticized a lot about the fact Mithril Gold Fellowship should be a place to release "special" figurines or vignettes(not necessarily named but well...) who has something "important" to do in the Tolkien Universe... Experience has shown us that instead of especially focusing on that, people submit their own "interests" no matter how relevant to the "speciality" of it (which is fine, we are in democracy) but this is VERY understable and is the counter effect of the lack of regular releases over the years... regular releases of armies (men, elves, orcs etc...) or common folks (adventurers, dancers, traders, diplomats, musicians...) People NEED to have such figurines from time to time, that's normal... and since these are not planned on a semi-regular release base, well it is also normal that people submit them in GF so that there are still some in the mithril range from time to time. the side effect is only the fact that the gold fellowship figurines turns out to be a "regular" release range style and does not have "the feeling" of something very special each time there is a release but I don't blame that on people who suggest or vote ... that is normal due to the absence or other alternatives. that being said I will analyse Gold Fellowship history a bit : Since Mithril Fellowship was created in 1992: - 8 Regular Fellowship releases before the creation of Gold Fellowship (all of them little vignettes or one 54mm exclusive all at Mithril initiative) Since the, 82 Gold Fellowship releases for Gold Fellowship (not counting free bonus figurines, all special characters): year 2005-2006 : First year of creation, 19 releases, 18 personnalities, among which 7 vignettes, the first "non personnality" of the range was the Dunadan Female Ranger, december 2006, which was supposed to be a remake of the M16 and broke with the "concept" of Gold Fellowship being "special characters" with the motivation that M16 WAS a special figurine, if not "character"... then we saw many other "common" figurines appearing in the suggestions... year 2007 : 7 "not-named/special figurines, 5 personnalities among which 2 vignettes... (quite a change indeed...) year 2008 : 2 "not special", 10 "personnalities" among which no vignette at all year 2009 : 4 "not special", 8 "personnalities" among which 1 vignette year 2010 : 5 "not special", 7 "personnalities" among which 1 semi-vignette (horn of helm) year 2011 : 3 "not special" among which a semi-vignette of Ent and orc, 9 "personnalities" among which one Sauron and 2 great vignettes (Beregond and Passing of Elessar) a GREAT year indeed. year 2012 : so far 10 winning suggestions : 2 "not special" (among which a scene of Harad) 8 "personnalities" among which 2 half-vignettes (Boromir passing and Legolas&Gimli on Arod's back) all in all there are more personnalities that we thought... but there is a lack of vignette except for 2011 which was exceptionnal. We have to consider that those vignettes "happened" due to the choice of Chris to make them so they were big vignettes, and not single or dual month... we did not get the opportunity to submit vignettes for quite a while.
