Chris seems quite taken with the idea of an undead army. I am happy to read so many great ideas and it seems that our options this month are quite split between the dead and the living. I have checked the list against the submissions below and there does not seem to be any missing ideas this month.
This vote is a blind vote so you will only see the current result after you submit your vote. One vote per member. We will have the 2nd round on the 25th and that will run until the end of this month.

Samwise Gamgee casting the dust from Galadriel's gift into the air near the Three-Farthing Stone.
Chapter: The Grey Havens 'And at the end he found that he still had a little of the dust left; so he went to the Three-Farthing Stone, which is as near the centre of the Shire as no matter, and cast it in the air with his blessing.'
I envisage Sam standing by the stone with one arm extended casting the dust, the other hand holding the box that Galadriel gave him. Slightly more rounder around the waist and with finer clothes - after all he would be back to eating proper hobbit meals.

Deadmen of Dunharrow – Banner bearer on foot
a figure fitting to MS439 King of the Dead, MS498 Dead Rider of Dunharrow and the new MZ638 Deadman of Dunharrow
A standard or banner is missing so far. The banner of this gaunt fellow is much more ragged and 'floating' than all existing standards of any other middle earth folk, maybe there is an animal skull or even human skull on top of the flagpole.
Lord of the Rings The Return of the King Chapter II The passing of the grey company
'The Dead are following' said Legolas. 'I see shapes of Men and of horses and pale banners like shreds of cloud, and spears like winter-thickets on a misty night. The Dead are following.'
suggested this one already in July 2011, in April 2012 and in March 2015

So, back to my Freca campaign:
FRECA Lord of lands alongside the source of the Adorn
Freca was a fat, arrogant, dark-haired descendant of King Freawine who appears to have had "much Dunlendish blood" in his veins, and probably considered himself more Dunlending than Rohirrim. Certainly he held King Helm Hammerhand in sufficient contempt that he demanded the king's daughter as a bride for his son Wulf (Mithril figure MS280). His main claim to fame in Rohan history is that he was killed by a single blow from Helm's mighty fists.
It's hard to be certain of much else, but when he turned up for Helm's council he brought many men with him, so it seems likely he intended to start trouble, and would therefore have been dressed ready for battle, albeit probably over his finest clothes. His hair, arms and clothes are likely to have been an exotic mix of Dunlendish and Rohirrim styles.

Though I like the oathbreaker banner man idea a lot, with the idea of creating an undead army I thing there is another priority actually Deadmen of Dunharrow - Undead Archer (we have an officer (the king), we have a rider, we have an infantry man but we don't have archers... as far as I know we don't have any undead archers in the mithril range.... it could be a great addition for an army, but standard bearer and spearmen too will be useful .... the best would be a full range of 10 undeads.... could it be possible to submit a range of undead it has never been done before maybe we could submit it as a whole REGULAR range to Michael and Chris ? if we exclude barrow-wights and nazguls, or mewlips and corpse-candles & swamp stars or lesinas (desert ghouls) the only undead that could be used for deadmen of dunharrow army, at the moment are : from the "ghost warriors" range : M167 "walking dead" (sword foortman) M168 "ghoul" (sword foortman) M173 "skeleton of the underdeep" (sword foortman) from the "ancient folk" range : M251 "undead warrior" (sword foortman) from the "gold fellowship" : MS439 "king of the dead" (officer with spear) MS498 "dead rider of dunharrow" (mounted spearman) MZ638 "deadman of dunharrow" (sword foortman) that's a beginning, but lacking archers.... unless we consider undead do not have archers (they do not need to fight from afar... in which case my suggestion is not needed

If we all suggest a 'stiff' we should at least get one, . My thoughts on Harold's Banner bearer is that should it be chosen, would a plain banner staff not be the best option which then allows a ragged banner to be added from tissue? I appreciate however that this option would not fit in with those collectors who prefer not to paint their collection; I guess a replacement is easy enough to create from scratch.

Deadman of Dunharrow Horn-blower So, to jump on the Dead's 'band-wagon' I suggest a long-dead horn-blower winding a note on his horn (at the King of the Dead's bidding) to summon the Dead to follow and muster at Erech. Imagine the dark halls reverberating to the sound of a horn long quiet, as the host moves to fulfil theit oath.

Dear ddaines, not all collectors have your skill of removing and conversion , so I whould prefer to see the banner or standard even if ragged as part of the creepy fellow.

Oh dear, THREE Deadmen! – run! – hide! The spirits, that I called... By the way, all weapons the ghosts or spirits carry, swords, scimitars, spears, pikes, daggers, bows and arrows are just accessory parts – for the main weapon of the Oathbeaker army was fear, wasn't it?

DEADMAN of DUNHARROW AXE-BEARER
To continue this months "theme" : I see a companion to MZ638 (so happy seeing my suggestion come to life so to speak! ) being of similar design but wielding an ax in each decrepit bony hand with his cracked shield slung onto his back. Chris's excellent lumbering style as well as how he shows the skeletal frame peeking through the armor would make an amazing companion piece to the Deadman of Dunharrow "series" of figures!

Sorry folks, but Undead - even within the Mithril range - never were favourites of mine. I will resubmit the
Leader of the Mumakils
The leader of a Mumakil unit, as standing in the war council and debating (or taking orders) on how to use his Mumakil in the coming battles. As the Mumakil are likely not desert animals, he probably comes from the fertile areas of Far-Harad, and does not wear desert garb. He wears the armour and trappings of both an officer and Mumakil rider (though he is most likely not the rider himself, but commands a platform). He could be depicted in a relaxed position, with his helm in hand or lazily on his weapon grip, in the other hand his staff of command or pointing out some aspect...

Still, I really think a regular Army of the Dead full range of 10 figs would be a great addition to mithril range. this idea should be considered by Mithril could you pass the idea along to Lars and Chris, Michael?
as far as i know, this is the only "army" that is missing in the regular ranges... we have orcs, trolls, men of all ethnical origin except easterling cavalry (no comment), dwarves, elves of lorien/mirkwood.... but not the "famous" army of the dead... and building an army from "singles" from the GF suggestion might be 1) very expensive 2) restrictive/elitist 3) very long to achieve in order to have all kinds of army unit...

Haradan cavalry is also missing... Although Tolkien mentioned it in the Battle of the Pelennor Fields.
A few more orcs on wargs would also be welcome... There are only five of them in the complete Mithril range (including the Salute figure).
And Easterling infantry : there are only four existing Mithril figures I think.
So there is still some room for completing the ranges...
And after that : why not Cardolan, Arthedain en Rhudaur armies ?

Don't forget the Battle of Bywater – though Hobbits only fight when there is need to. some Hobbits archers, and armed with all kind of farming tools and Chestnut- and stone-throwers and they are fighting the ruffians... who are missing completly...

well i agree with you gentlemen but... the army of the dead is a pivotal army in a major event leading to the winning of the war. I agree for the battle of Bywater... but there are dozens of Hobbits (and several fitting adventurous type) in the regular range with a "regular price".... Orcs on warg I agree but these area a kind of unit among an army they are not the army itself, just the cavalry of it. Cardolan, Arthedain, Rhudaur armies....... these are men... ok they are not made but well these are men.. and we don't lack men in the Mithril range...
How many "undead warriors" do we have among the 600+ references? Seven all in all... 4 of them are discontinued, 3 of them are Gold Fellowship only (one of them actually discontinued too) and not all army corps are present.
if someone wants to build an undead army how can he do ? (an army being comprise of officers, horsemen, footmen, range weapons and contact weapons, standard bearer, and musician (in the case of the dead, horn blower)
Same can be said about easterling cavalry but as i said earlier I don't want to reopen this "scar"... and well, infantry is easier to produce (and sell...) than a cavalry...

Then let's see what happens with four suggestions of the same theme in the upcoming months vote, We haven't had something like this in the past, as I can remember. Will the Dead have any support, and if yes which one: banner - bow - horn or axe? all open, all possible. Or will it be one the Living ones? let's watch and see

actually we had something similar when it came to submit the three troll brothers... as for an "army", it could be the most expensive (not unreleased...) army of the mithril range if it comes to that... 21€ (or 30€+ ) for each figurine of the army... usually a mithril "army range" tends to have between 8 and 11€ each fig.... Of course that's less expensive than a Half-Orc army or a Iron Hill dwarf army

|
|
Post by barliman on Sept 7, 2017 14:55:09 GMT
Yes, quite right Master Gildor. A handful of expensive Dead of Dunharrow MS figures doesn't help anyone who needs an army, though they'd certainly be nice simply as collectors' pieces or army 'characters'. What we really need is an M range of such figures so that people can afford dozens of them!

What's the difference between Undead and Dead? I always thought or imagined Tolkien's Dunharrow fellas as Spirits or Ghosts of the Dead Oathbreakers. (surely incorporal is impossible to sculpt, of course) They are not animated, corporal "Zombies" or "Ghouls", are they?
|
|
|
Post by Gildor on Sept 7, 2017 17:49:57 GMT
well figurines being "materials" those dead can't be ghosts but "solid" Now that the "Army of the Dead" has three references in the mithril range, Chris would be obliged to respect a certain "canon" for others units of the same theme...and these are related to the last MZ638 or the King of the Dead.... As for Undead, it is more generic : a nazgul is undead, a barrow-wight is undead, a mewlip, a corpse candle, a swamp star, a ghoul, a lesinas.... all are undead too but not fitting the "army of the Dead" style/type which are "conscious yet feral and lethal undead warriors"

As there is no reference to the army of the dead doing any actual fighting - just spreading terror and fear by existing - my own needs for them are fully covered with the existing minis. If I had any urge to build an actual ARMY I would use one of the multitude of undead miniatures on the market to provide a hundred rank & file to complement the character minis from this range. On the other side anything with "undead" or "zombie" in its heritage seems to be popular and an economic success (certainly not with my money), so doing some more - especially a regular range - could be a sound decision.

An excellent summation, Master Axel. A full range would (theoretically) be a sound commercial addition to the Mithril range, and would certainly be a bonus to those (such as myself) who want to have, or reinforce, a full Army of the Dead designed in The Man's superior style. I'm almost drooling at the prospect.

The Battle of the Pelennor Fields is just over and the Haradrim are running away. His right flank is pierced by a spear he brokes at the middle. His helmet in hand and his sword is nowhere to be seen
