hmmm, wasn't said in the last newsletter, that this fatty one will be released as an MX?? My hope is, that the dwarf says, he won't go farther, like he did in Mirkwood O.K. I would love to see, how Chris would create a fat dwarf.

hello!! may be it's because the name"bombur" is different in French translation, but, even if i've readen for may be ten times, all of the Tokien'stories, i don't remember who's this mann?? Where does he come from? And i even don't remember if i've never ever seen this name "bombur". Can you help me, please and try to explain me with the easyest english words as you can, who's this mann. Thanks for all!!! Hervé

The quickest reference is that Bombur was a dwarf in the Hobbit, one of Thorin's companions who happened to be a fat 'knacker' (rather large around the stomach) , he is the one who fell into the Enchanted River in Mirkwood and fell into a deep sleep for a while. In later years it is mentioned that he became so fat that he had to be carried about by younger dwarves. Interestingly to me is Bombur not his name in whatever language? If I see a French person's name such as Pierre (excuse the spelling) in a novel it doesn't get translated to an English form of the name (at least I don't recall this).

No, Master Dave, the idiot translators in many countries decided that they knew better than Tolkien, and translated many of the names he created into weird and wonderful inventions of their own. Heaven alone knows why - and JRRT didn't understand it either. Have you never seen any of his letters to Rayner Unwin et al on the subject? In despair, Tolkien even went so far as to write an essay offering advice on how to translate those personal and place names that had to be translated(in order to keep their meanings - "Goldberry", for instance), and which didn't need to be translated at all. Sadly it was all a waste of time - the translators carried on doing "their own thing", and continue to do so to this day. Sad. It rather ruined the whole point of the original names having Elvish meanings etc - which is why JRRT was so irritated by the translators' collective audacity.
So, Master Herve, as Dave says, Bombur is the fat dwarf in The Hobbit. Simple as that.

hmmm, wasn't said in the last newsletter, that this fatty one will be released as an MX?? Yep. But that will be Bombur at his first appearance during the "unexpected party". I am sure Chris will manage to give us a totally other incarnation, like Bombur armoured at the battle of the five armies, sleeping in Mirkwood or [obese... erk. sorry:] prospering voluminous in his later days. Regarding the translations... I found the German translation to be pretty good (well, the original one, I am not so happy with the modernized version thats now published). Especially the Hobbit names are translated with care, like making Baggins to Beutlin (Beutel being a German word for bag) and translating the various occupations and plants. Afaik most of the Elvish, Dwarvish and Gondorian names remain untouched, unless they are descriptive (like Oakenshield to Eichenschild). Overall a good translation, though naturally not able to keep the melody of the language.

It's just occurred to me - is it "politically correct" to refer to anyone as "fat" these days? Or should we describe Bombur as "horizontally challenged".

Yes Go Bombur go! Cheers Hwolf
For Hervé from french wikipedia:
Bilbo le Hobbit
Auteur J. R. R. Tolkien Genre Fantasy Version originale Titre original The Hobbit, There and Back Again

That Bombur wasn't introduced as a fat dwarf in the Hobbit-chapter, Barliman, but he became fatter growing old. That's what we know. Those descriptions by RRT in the 'Unexpected Party' chapter mostly refer to colours and garment, I think. Well, and to behaviour, of course.

Sorry, Master Tree, you're completely in error there! - Bombur is described as "immensely fat and heavy" on his very first appearance in "The Hobbit", when he fell on top of Thorin in the doorway at Bag End.

Yay, the deadline is past and Bombur wins! Only problem is I shall have to think of an entirely new figure to suggest next month...
