Hi all
One thing that has been occupying my thoughts - vaguely - recently is the Mithril models of the actual Fellowship of the Ring. They are perfectly nice - BUT its obvious that the Fellowship and MX miniatures are of a higher standard of detail and attention.
And I think the Fellowship, as a whole, deserve that extra detailing.
In the old "red" MERP rulebook, there are a bunch of really nice painted images by someone (maybe McBride, but I have no idea) each focussing on one of the central characters. The images are reprinted in the hardback 2nd edition (I have page 221 open with the two pictures of Aragorn and Arwen on it.) I would love to see miniatures like that, in those poses, with that sort of detailing.*
The images have a more passive pose. Poor old Aragorn doesn't have to be holding his sword aloft (does his arm ever get tired?). Gimli doesn't need his axe at the ready. Legolas isn't firing his bow. Perhaps the "linking idea" is that its the Fellowship as they prepare to leave Rivendell. So everyone is equipped, but they aren't fighting, or just sitting around. Alternately, a play on the old MERP cover art where the entire fellowship are looking off towards Mount Doom (for some odd reason- I suspect they are all looking off towards the Redhorn Pass, but the artist decided to make it more dramatic) - everyone looking tired and watchful.
In fact I'd go so far as to wish for two sets: the Fellowship and the heroes of the War of the Ring. So also: Eomer, Eowyn, Faramir, Theoden, Gildor, Glorfindel, Arwen**, Elrond***, Denethor and I dunno, Goldberry perhaps.... Some of those models are only available as 54mm pieces.
The set(s) could be available as a box set, or individually. I'd suggest a higher print run - maybe as high as 1000 each, or more, to keep the price down.
Having such a set would mean that Tolkien's heroes would be beautifully represented, and future Fellowship model slots would be freed up for portraying more special incidents in the saga.
Anyway, just a thought.
Gavin
* All the Mithril Aragorn portrayals have been inspired by this particular image - note the boots, cloak, bags and so forth. The only difference is that in the image, Aragorn's hair is mussed and curly. Much more a becoming look
** Not hanging off Aragorn, or messing with a flag.
*** Not reading a book. We know he's a Loremaster and all, but I am sure there's the odd time he isn't reading
