While "Great wolf-chieftain leaping to attack" won the first round, it only had a 2 vote lead so there is no guarantee it will win the final round. Please take a moment to comment too on why you support an idea as your input can sway undecided voters. The current status is always shown. This vote will run until the end of this month.

The suggestion, Thorin with Harp, is from me. I really much like the idea that these dwarves started the quest without any proper weapons, but they brought musical instruments with them. These picture is by Tove Janson from the Hobbit and it really captures the grim style of music making of the dwarves.

but they brought musical instruments with them. I always wondered what happened to these instruments. While some of them travel quite well, some are, kind of, unwieldy in and under the mountain, or in the air: "viols as big as themselves". If Thorin does not win this month he can perhaps make a reappearnce in a double suggestion dec/jan with a "Goblin inspecting Thorins harp while digging through the luggage". Just now an image forms in my mind of a goblin inspecting one of these big viols. Or perhaps it is just better to assume they left the instruments in Bree, to be fetched later or brought by relatives after their success. Dwarfs are nothing if not practically minded, and big viols somehow are not.

Perhaps we just have to accept (like Bilbo being given a pair of boots at Rivendell, which are visible in the colour plate of the Eagle's eyrie - mentioned in 'Tolkien, Maker of Middle Earth') that Tolkien either genuinely forgot about the instruments which I believe was the case with including the boots, or conveniently forgot about them because as you rightly say Axel, some would be a bit unwieldy. Or maybe the dwarves simply left them at Bag-End or Bree (I can't recall if the instruments are mentioned later on). I did suggest Bilbo emptying his boots of water after the raft elf episode, but it was rejected by CT

As I do remember the story, Thorin & Co lost their ponys and all the luggage at the "Invitation" to Goblin-Town under the Misty Mountains, they saw the last pony-tail disapearing in the gap in the cave, where they thought to have found shelter

It's a good thing they didn't have drums anyway... I certainly hope that a little more complex work will come out of this, because this month the ideas themselves are silly
