Elrond's pole is unacceptably thin : I can't practically prevent the paint flaking off . Even the middle thickness of poles would be a big improvement

Remember that Mithril's are not made for wargaming, but display, so realistic proportions trumps durability (within reason, of course - there's a balance there).
If you decide to use Mithrils for games, you can always replace the spears and such with brass rod or something similar to make them more durable. That or reinforce them with two part epoxy before painting.

Yeah, for display, I leave things like spears and so forth intact. Don't touch them and no paint comes off.
For gaming models, I buy plastic miniatures from That Other Company and swap the spear hands, for example. The various Mithril Rohan spearmen have pretty delicate spears.
