The news is quite fresh.
After all the problems between Peter Jackson and New Line Cinema, it seems everybody has come to a truce. New Line along with MGM will produce TWO movies on "The Hobbit" , with P.Jackson and F.Walsh as executive producers. The production begins next year. Both films will be shooted at the same time (like LoTR) First movie should be released in 2010. the second one in 2011.
Expect a new "Tolkien Mania" for these two years...Maybe it will be positive for Mithril. I hope so!

Expect a new "Tolkien Mania" for these two years...Maybe it will be positive for Mithril. I hope so! This news is not as ideal as you may think. It WILL make more people insane for The Hobbit figures (and LOTR) but JACKSON's VERSION of the Hobbit will become mainstream and therefore will have a negative effect on Mithril. New Collectors will demand the films characters, not the books. So it is a mixed blessing. NEW LINE CINEMA has totally corrupted the preceptions of the viewing audiences when it comes to these topics. This is understandable and expected but nevertheless annoying. Also remember that this will mean that GW will be even more enticed to cause us trouble and apply pressure to TE to restrict our license. Still I will personally enjoy the new movies, and it will mean a greater awareness of Tolkien's original book.

A totally random suggestion; absolutely vague off the top of my head.
How about offering GW some sort of sub-contracting agreement?
You guys make RPG/Collectors/non movie figures and they make their movie based miniatures (since, frankly, their non movie releases have been...vile).
I am not, however, utterly certain that we will see GW Hobbit figures. New Line or TE might demand a higher licensing fee...and the movies will do very well, but they may not be the pop culture defining moment that the Lord of the Rings movies were (because The Hobbit is no such thing compared to the trilogy). As I've said before, the movies sold their licensing as a spin off bonanza which was supposed to last a long time. It didn't. GW themselves were complaining about "the end of the LOTR bubble" about a year and a half after Return of the King was released.
GW may not wish to pay out for a new license, or pay extra money on continuing their current license. Decipher (who made the card games and RPG this time around) are now bankrupt. I am sure the fate of other licensing companies will weigh heavily on GW stockholders and board members.
So...I would think that very little is certain in the miniatures industry regarding The Hobbit.

fact is GW Hobbit line already exist... Smaug, Sauron as Necromancer, Dol Guldur boxed sets... they have anticipated , and have had licence to produce things on all that TE has to offer in terms of licence.

Yeah, their attitude to anyone else in the "geek" industry is...well its pretty special. Everything from their attempts to rewrite history ("we realised that no one in the UK even played Dungeons and Dragons, so we decided to support our own products instead") to their ban on any mention of anyone not GW on their forums. Still, was vaguely worth suggesting. Vaguely. But as Gildor said, the Hobbit does not represent another massive range. You might get a year of releases, maybe another year from this second movie. In other word's Mithril's long range plan needs to be simply to outlast the buggers.

Also, tell Chris to send his CV to Peter Jackson. If anyone can stand amongst the pantheon of Alan Lee and John Howe and so on...its Chris Tubb. It would kinda leave you guys in the lurch...but hell, its Hollywood

Don't forget that Peter Jackson is a miniature collector! There was a documentary DVD with, I believe The Two Towers special edition, which showed part of his collection. You can also see P. J. with the Perry twins (miniature sculptors, who happen to work for GW...) at www.perry-miniatures.com/index2.html "select a range - Peter Jackson figures, at the bottom". These guys made a special range of miniatures for him which is not for sale anywhere. Go for it Chris!

Hmmm.. Hmm...
Chris does design for PJ who streamlines it into the movie and thus it is licenced by GW for tabletop wargaming, for whom the Perrys do the design...
Sounds like a headbreaker :-)

Considering GW's latest financial statements...I'm guessing that GW may not indeed license the Hobbit miniatures. Or if they do get the finance to start a range, then it will probably be quite limited indeed.
(Which isn't surprising - there isn't exactly a vast horde of potential minis from the Hobbit. There's a lot, but not a huge amount)
