Thank you, aelfwine for the definition of armour - which is correct. - I think that all that was published about Gondorians in the Tengwar-newsletters by Chris was very much convincing. The pictures I have seen of the new series do impress me. And I think it is up to Chris to decide how to perform them. His ideas to visualize literature that closely in terms of miniatures according to Tolkien's works - are brilliant - and let's say, for several years. Continually perfect. So, who are we to tell an artist what to do and how to do it? (That's why I dislike the idea of the MX-series - though the first miniature was perfect - of course) Please, do not compare Mithril with GWS. Not even in terms of armour or even size (laughter). So, as a resume - let's Chris do his Gondorians, as he thinks of them, please. I am hopefully looking forward to them. Thank you, being that patient reading all this.

Hm, I don't know if I can help ... let me try M 369 is "Dain Huscarl" - a dwarf MB 369 is a boxed set: The Uruloki I do agree that these numbers are a bit confusing - so was it to me. The answer of Mithrandir did not really match your question, I think. He was right saying that 346 and 347 were planned as two army-sets - but they were never produced. That's why there are no miniatures for these two numbers. So, I think that there just is the difference in naming the miniatures: M 369 really is Dain Huscarl (as a single figure) and MB 369 really is the Uruloki The difference simply is M or MB As far as I know this only happened once that two times a number was given to two such different miniatures. If you want I could prove this by sending you photos of both of these.
I am reacting to your question, because I am still trying to complete a catalogue of all Mithril Miniatures. That's why I came across the same question you had.
I do hope I could help you a little bit.

Huooommmm, hom.... casting with "Resin" is much more cheaper, I think. hom, but I'm not am expert ... right, you can take the moulds ... once you have got an original to cast .... then it might take some skill to form the moulds .... huom, it's not a problem, I think ...... but: huuuuooooommmm hom, I wouldn't do .... what you get is not what you want, because of the material ... ney never! It is Resin-casting. You can tell from the weight .... it's not metal. I'm not sure, but there was a company called "Fenryll" that specialized on this way of casting. ... Huuuooommmmhom. I don't appreciate a Mithril casted in "resin"..... no hom.

Hej Hammershield, To me it's very interesting what you reveiled about the Dwaw of Waw version being different from the later released LR- figure. Tar mej fan! (sorry ) ... up to now I thought I was the only one having that "jewel" in my collection. It's from 1996, isn't it? And it's a brilliant figure, I think. You might have a look at the MMP-Unique-page (top, second from right). Is it the same? I wonder how many there are ...

I really cannot judge.- No. Each time I hold a Mithril-miniature in my hands to paint it ... huooomm...I always say: this is the best one; as you get close to all the details if you want to paint ... huoommrhuomm .. I cannot sort out any ... it all depends on what characters you like, I think. Some like Elves, some like orcs, etc. I do like all of them !!!!!!!!! huooommm.

Mine arrived today ... I do absolutely agree with you, twrich! I wasn't able to do anything else than cutting and glueing those parts after they were unpacked. - Extraordinary, I would like to say. .... Well, concerning discussions about that tiny girl being in that series - it's good, I think. Because of her we can see those differences in size more clearly. (I think it's better that she's carrying a bow, than having her sitting on a stool knitting ...) I would like to suggest that we, in future, should not comment on any release before it's in our hands. Respect, Mr. Tubb !

Yes, David, I do agree. There already are some female Hobbits, so why not this one with a bow - I would also be interested in that ruined tower wall, by the way. It's not a metal casting, I think - maybe some kind of resin; but anyway. Very nice figures indeed and just in time before Christmas ...

They are from top left to right parts from: M167a - (next line):- a Gondorian - M308 - M222a - M364or365 - (next line) - a Rohirrim - M296 - M296 - M296 - (next line) - M135 - M164 - M154 - M293 I would have to look up the Gondorian and Rohirrim ones because there are so many which differ in details. Oh, Gildor, so you started collecting just some years before I did - Well, I had a quick look at the first ones of the M-series and see you are right. It was 1988. At the moment I can only see one way to find out. We got to have a look at the old leaflets and information from Mithril ... well, I know someone who is collecting them and I can assure he will know ... but he's more Entish than I try to be. - I will ask, I promise. - Until I get an answer (in case he gives) you should just do as you thought of. This is to rely upon what you can read at the bases.

I really would like to have reactions to the MX-Frumgar-release. So those should be posted here, please. It wasn't me suggesting that miniature, and as you all can imagine, I didn't even sculpt it. I just was taking part in an idea about MX-releases. First of all, I am interested in your reactions to the Frumgar-miniature - was it worth it? What did we do wrong?
Huuuuuooooommmmmrhhuoom .... your comments, please!

hmmmmmmmmmmmm... sorry.... I'm not online that often here - there are other things to keep me busy.
Let me try to sum it up:
aelfwine, the need (I also do feel) for the extension south of Minas Tirith has started as we know from the Lossarnach-M-series. Axemen and swordsmen, yes they are. The axes are quite small - compared with miniatures revealed by other compaines - (like "fenryll" or others - I always wondered how these bodies could carry any armour or weapons). HUUuuuoooomm........
You said you're not a "proper" Mithril-collector .... I'm sorry about that, but all I know about this are the releases by GWS . There were many releases of "Southern men", which were from Harad or the far more East. - I dare to say I painted all of them .....
.... huooooommm but it's not Mithril........hoooom.
well, about the "Gondorian-army-look", as you called it, I was more surprised when seeing the third part of the trilogy in a cinema ..... huuuuuooommm ... those Gondorians are like knights taken from the Middle-Ages of Britain ( as you can see their armour in Leeds now after it was taken from the Tower in London to the "Royal Armouries Museum" (15th century) .....
huuuuuoooommmmm ... this is why I would suggest reading the "Tengwars" again because there another image of Gondorians is explained and partillay described.
Hummmm...... I don't hope to have been offensive ..... what did I write? .... (hope I wasn't).... huuooomm.
Hooom .... well, if there's anything I could do for you.....
just let me know ..... hom.

As far as I know the MX-Troll went its way to production. I am sure Michael will keep us informed about everything, as he alsways does. As for the vignettes ... well, I just thought about the fact that there's only one person to do the sculpturing - which means the basic and most difficult work to be done (Chris Tubb). Huuuooommmmmmm .... I think we shouldn't put too much haste in the production of new releases, as we all like the quality of the miniatures very much. Imagine one person keeping up with the monthly production for the Gold-Fellowship, then producing an enormous amount of figures for the M-range (just remember the Lossarnach-series ;D ) and additionally making the MX-miniatures. Huuuommmm....hommmm I think this is more than a lot of high-skilled work for one person. ...... hom. That's why I really don't miss any more vignette releases in the M-series. I have to admit that I can't keep up with painting ........... huom, but maybe I'm too slow with that ;D

Well, David As to me, the Dol-Amroth-support is a fundamental part of the battle on the Pellennor Fields and about Minas Tirith - as all of Gondorian armies were. Such as Lossarnach was amongst them. Here it is where I still adore the castings of these (as there are so many varieties - without changing the original castings - let us just think of the possibility of adding an axe- or a swordhand to a figure, I bought the second set, too, by the way - and this is where it makes sense if you want to have (*sorry*) an army that can furthermore be individual with each figure. Isn't it that what makes MIthrils? - Individualities, even in terms of warbands. Back to the (left out) Dol-Amroth-support in the film ... Huooommmmmmmmmmm I would like to say a lot. By the way GWS released those "Dol-Amroth Knights" as an additional production to the films. Well, I've got them all, unpainted ... I didn't like them - but you can have each of them, just let me know. It's quality why I stick to Mithril, and to me that's it. By the way, I've also been buiding dioramas for years ... Oooops ... it has become too personal now here. Sorry to all reading this ... it wasn't meant as a personal profiling ... me thoughts just went off

Huommmmmm The explanation for the selection of the January vote made me a bit curious. Well, just a bit. I suggested the mounted Imrahil and added the idea of supporting him with a command, because I took up the idea of new series that might follow the Lossarnach warriors. Of course I thought of some more figures than those few I suggested. What is a prince and a command without ... well you know. I think David will like this idea I thought it over for some days ... huom.... So the only thing I can do is to start a new thread, hoping that Michael keeps us well-informed - as he always does. I am not in a hurry to learn more about the next M-releases and plans about it and I do not want to put haste on anybody here. But if there is someone who can answer this, well huoooom , I would be pleased.

Hi David, wishfully thinking ... so did I. That's why I suggested the mounted Imrahil in full armour for the last vote. Not forgetting he would need a command ... of course "some" more people would have to follow them - I know you like the idea of a release of a Dol Amroth- "series" - as I do - I simply was surprised to learn that they are thought of as a regular M-release. I didn't know that. So I started a new thread today, trying to find out about Mithril's plans for the next series of the regular M-series. I am sure Michael will keep us informed. HUuommm ..... there is no haste (but sometimes information keeps you more patient)

Great idea! - as the release of the Lossarnach "army", including the second set, was brilliant. David extended the idea quite a lot (and I cannot contradict him ). But we should keep in mind the work and time it means to pruduce such extensive sets. I would be glad if a similar project could be released once in two years, no matter which "army" it might be. In the end a agree with Axe99 and feel the same about the Mithril production.

Yes, Gildor ... I think this is a very good idea for a classification of the miniatures. On the one hand it informs about availability and "classification" in terms of rareness and on the other it might once cover a complete list.

Post by Theobald on Jan 14, 2006 13:58:32 GMT
Well, this idea of a database wasn't mine. When I came in contact with Gildor I learned that he was working on this and I simply wanted to support this idea. This is why I started this thread. Just to keep things going. Of course Mithrandir so far did a brilliant job with MMP. I really don't see this as a "rival-attempt" to MMP. axe99, I do not favour the one or the other and I would be pleased if I can help both. All I want is to have access to a site which covers all Mithril productions, including those that were never released by Mithril. Mithrandir's page of "uniques" helped me a lot to find out which castings of the Mw 437 were ever made. Gildor seems to have some more information about other releases, I don't know. Well, why restrict a database to those miniatures that were released by Mithril? Of course a database of the old M-series is the basic idea. - Thanks to Henk here. He has finished this a long time ago (You can find the link on the official Mithril homepage). I think we should try to extend this database, as Mithrandir did, including those old Christmas figures and other castings that were never released. Then we shouldn't forget to include the new releases, though most of us can touch them with our hands. So, why create a database in which something is missing? I wouldn't buy an encyclopaedia in which words are missing. - Someone wrote that he wouldn't like to see things he could never achieve, well it's the same with my encyclopaedia. It defines words, like "millionaire" and I'm not. But I wouldn't like to miss the definition in an accurate list of words. Sorry, this text might be a bit too long ... but I think I had to explain my intention of this thread. Dieter.

From some of the entries on this board I learned that there is interest in building up a database of all Mithril Miniatures, including those figures by Chris Tubb that were never released by Mithril. As I am interested in such a project, too, I start this thread trying to contribute to this idea. As far as I know Gildor is working at such a project. So did I, some years ago. From some entries here I can read that Michael and Chis are also interested in the idea of building up such a database. Well Michael, as you are more skilled and experienced in handling and building up web-sites than I am - I just have got a rough idea of the work it means - let's come to terms, please. So, what is needed? First of all a list of all items (which I could contribute to - it exists here). Then we need photos of all these (This is where I also could help). We need a place to collect these photos and someone to sort out the best ones for the database. Yes, and someone to present the database on the internet (I know it's not that simple). I just want to keep this idea moving. What do you all think of this?

Hi David, ... just to give you a "yes" You're absolutely right. I never thought of tools to be supplied - maybe as a set. What for? Everybody who is doing some painting on 32mm miniatures knows what kind of tools he's getting along with, I think. The price for this would be too disadvantageous. But what about exchanging experiences ? Shouldn't we start a new Thread about when to use a 0004 marten brush or a toothpick or even a needle? - As I have been making so-called table-tops myself for some years and still keep on painting Chris Tubbs' miniatures, I just think of the idea of helping each other. - Hm, I should ask Micheal if a new Thread of this kind would be sensible. .... Anyway - have a nice day (the snow comes down here).

Yes, great. I received mine yesterday and was lucky to have enough time to unpack and even fix the arms. With this I could realize the variety of posture that is possible to make similar castings appear different (with the additional set there are so many possibilities - much more compared to the "old" Gondorian Army with which diversity was much more restricted to painting). All in all: absolutely great castings! And: The armour and garment does absolutely fit to the ideas published in "Tengwar" and to the released Gondorian Army. So, I am dilighted, too.

Gone for 2.20. I wish I would seen him before auction end... Hi Axel, just have a look at Henk's Homepage - you can find it on the Mithril homepage - the first link is: collectors (on the left). Henk has got a nice archive where you can find small pictures of all the very early releases. But don't be sad - as Zoetrop wrote, the offered miniature was out of blister and sword and shield obviously were missing.
